OG Summer Gypsy Games 2003
2008.08.08
The city of Ajka is famous for two things: its crystal glass and flatland contests. This is the fourth year in a row that we organize the largest flatland comp in this city that can be found above the lake Balaton. The main reasons that we do this outside Budapest are the three handball courts with smooth concrete next to one another, friendly people, nice environment and good opportunities for parties. These are the things that are worth traveling for. This year we added something extra: we held our first flatland camp in Ajka: five days of practice and fun before the contest. The best to learn new tricks, get perfectly used to the floor and make your combos even more dialed, not to mention making friends.A flatland camp for gypsies? Sounds good - even though many people showed up from Germany and Austria beside almost every single Hungarian flatlanders, and they were really satisfied with everything, I guess. We had the pleasure to have Sebastian Pospischil, Stefan Dittrich and Holger Rupp from Germany, Michael Sommer, Markus Redlberger and lots of other guys from Austria at the comp. As for Hungarians, I could mention OG Marton Szilagyi, Pal Gyenes, Peter Sarlos and Peter Szabolcsi as the really outstanding riders, but tons of talented young guns showed up as well.
The plan was really plain and simple: riding for five days, and then hold a really good contest with the least stress involved. We held the prelims on Saturday, the weather was really nice, and more than 45 riders entered in 3 classes (Expert, Master and Pro). The best 8 riders from each class have qualified themselves for the finals on Sunday.
It is so damn hard to judge flatland nowadays, but we managed to make fair decisions. What made our job a bit easier was that there were some outstanding riders on each class. In the Expert class Tibor Grob showed some really nice tomahawk and crackpacker combos. The Masterclass was dominated by Pal Varga with pedaling upsidedown megaspins and spinning hitchhikers. You could see some really high level riding from the riders of the Pro class: Peter Szabolcsi did brakeless bikeflips to brakeless decade, Peter Sarlos performed a flawless run with really smooth riding, packed with some of the hardest tricks out there, but the main surprise was Sebastian with the best contest run of his life. I have seen him riding in several contests, and he was always a little bit nervous, but this time he overcame that thing and did brakeless whiplash to pedalfive combos and halfpackers to crossfoot hitchhikers just to mention a few. He qualified in first place, and everyone agreed that he had deserved it.
Saturday night: party in an open-air movie theatre. We held the premiere of Trick Stars 5 video of Marton, and some other flatland movies could also be seen. Two hours later most people switched to party mode (thanks to the high quality Hungarian beer called Borsodi), and some strange things started to happen when Peter Sarlos started making some bets: kissing boys for a beer. He almost earned five beers by kissing the balls of Stefan Dittrich.. who shoved his really rare pet: the german elephant. For you that have never heard of this beautiful animal: Stefan's two pockets were the ears, and you can imagine what was its nose.. really nice animal.
Right after this two friends of ours made a non-expected soft gay show with pink clothes and leopard G-strings, but nothing really serious has happened.
Csaba Györi performed some of the most hardcore drunk Jackass action on our way to the Bla-Bla Pub with the hardest slams known to mankind, then the company almost got kicked out of the pub due to breakdancing to gypsy music, but the locals also joined the riders, so it turned out to be lots of fun.
Sunday: the finals. Everyone slowed down a little bit after such a crazy night but after a while everyone started to warm up for the contest. The girls from Red Bull arrived with some energy drinks that helped a lot.
The final results in the Expert and Masterclass did not change: Tibor Grob ended up getting first, just like Pal Varga in Masterclass.
The pros also did well: third place went to Pal Gyenes with some really nice combos, Peter Sarlos got second with another flawless run while Seppl took the win with an almost as good run as he had performed on the day before. Congratulations to all the competitors!
We held the Most Disgusting Trick Contest just after the Pro Finals: many young gay-dressed talents showed up with some of the least stylish tricks of the planet, but the award went to Stefan who did his best (I mean worst) and showed us the German elephant once again. Huge props!
We had a really positive feedback from all the riders, and lots of them promised to come back next year. We are looking for every riders arrival for the 2004 OG Summer Gypsy Games!!! Download trailer (13,5MB).
